2017 Janzen Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The renowned Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard sits on the valley floor in the heart of Oakville. It has become one of the most coveted vineyard due to its consistently excellent quality. A classic Cabernet profile jumps from the glass with notes of graphite and cassis. Rich in texture while soft and supple in the mouth, this wine offers layers of black and red fruits, spice, savory herbs and florals notes. The finish is long and elegant. Every vintage of Beckstoffer To Kalon is age worthy and this vintage is no exception. It should age nicely in the cellar for 15+ years.

Plenty of crème de cassis, black raspberries, flowery incense, chocolate, and loads of spice emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Janzen Beckstoffer To Kolan Vineyard, a plusher, sexier wine compared to the Missouri Hopper. With a super lush, full-bodied, seamless texture and not a hard edge to be found, it's another stunning wine from this estate that makes the most of the vintage. It's actually every bit as good as the 2016.

Only a tiny amount of this wine was made, 100% varietal from the famous site in the heart of Oakville. Lovely red fruit and ample acidity give it a lift of brightness that persists across a palate of supple power, dusted in crushed rock, dried herb and clove. This will do well over time; enjoy best from 2027–2030. Cellar Selection. —V.B.

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, August 2020
Rating: 92
If a little less immediate on the nose to start, this very deep and well-defined Cabernet fills out impressively given a bit of time in the glass, and it exhibits an increasing sense of layered complexity as it does. It is unbashedly ripe in flavor with terrific fruity concentration and all of the loamy, sweet oak complexity that its aromas promise, and yet, while a sizeable wine to be sure, it never once threatens to be too much. Its ongoing richness, its mannerly tannins and its winemaking polish combine to tempt early drinking, but this is an eminently cellar-worthy wine of structured balance and considerable depth that deserves to be laid away for a no fewer than five years and will easily grow for a decade or more.
