2019 Janzen Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

$165.00

The valley floor location of the Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard provides exceptional terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon.  On the southern boundary of the Oakville AVA , this is one of the Napa Valley’s oldest grape growing locations with its initial planting dating back to the late 1800’s.

Richness and concentration are dominate descriptors for our 2019 vintage of Missouri Hopper.  The 2019 vintage features a beautiful purple hue, with aromatic notes of scorched earth, clove and cassis. The palate is expansive and full bodied, with dark fruits and a balanced acidity and minerality. The rich mouthfeel and long tannin filled finish will leave you tasting this wine long after the bottle is finished. We anticipate a long 20-25 year lifespan for this behemoth.

Rating: 92**
An extravagant, very full-bodied and outgoing wine that is rife with sweet, blackcurrant fruit made sweeter yet by its generous appointment of oak, this no-holds-barred rendition is sure to delight devotees of unabashedly hedonistic Cabernets while others might understandably find it to be a bit over the top. That it is extraordinary rich is beyond question, but much of that richness owes to its unfettered ripeness, a point driven home by the palpable heat that combines with its age-demanding tannins to, at least for the time being, make for fairly rough going at the finish. Set it aside for no fewer than a half-dozen years, even if gentility likely lies out of its reach.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Janzen Missouri Hopper Vineyard is also 100% varietal and comes from a great site located on the western side of the valley, in the Oakville AVA. It's a more black/blue-fruited beauty with tons of spicy, incense, lead pencil, and chocolaty goodness on the nose. These carry to a full-bodied Cabernet with terrific balance, building tannins, and an almost Graves-like sense of scorched earth and roasted herbs that emerges with time in the glass. It's another gorgeous wine from this label. It needs 2-4 years of bottle age and will cruise over the following 10-15.
