The Bacigalupi family’s estate vineyard site is in the Russian River AVA. Planted on alluvial soils close to the river, this vineyard ripens fairly quickly and offers us a great window of peak conditions in which to pick these grapes. 2014 yielded another exceptional vintage for Pinot Noir from this vineyard site.
In the glass this wine has a violet hue with a clear rim. Wild strawberry and complex spice tones are prevalent in the nose. The mouthfeel is mellow upon entry showing cranberry and currant flavors that end with a burst of acid and some forest floor notes. This very limited production wine from one of Russian River best known Growers has received great acclaim from critics and consumers alike.
Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine, June 2016
Nicely filled and fairly open on initial take but showing tighter structural lines and a sense of reserve not found in its rounder and riper partner below, this well-balanced offering impresses as several years away from coming fully into its own. While given to a bit of acidy stiffness and finished with enough tannic astringency to advise keeping, it is long on deep and defined fruit and has the right pieces in place to make waiting worthwhile.
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Oct 28, 2016
Slightly more interesting is the 2014 Lucie Pinot Noir Dutton Ranch, which is from a dry-farmed sector planted with the Martini clone of Pinot Noir, and totally destemmed. However, proprietor Claus Janzen utilized about 40% new oak in the upbringing of this medium to full-bodied Pinot Noir with notes of Asian spices, black cherries and pomegranate. It is round, juicy, ripe and best drunk over the next 4-5 years.
Wine Enthusiast, October 2016
Soft, juicy acidity and texture buoy this wine in wonderful ways, providing a lithe foundation to punches of sassafras and truffled earth. Sourced from the famous vineyard on Westside Road in the northern reaches of the appellation, it shows off a flair of pine along with dark cherry.
Wine Spectator, September 30, 2016
This slowly builds, gaining depth and richness, with an elegant, strawberry-scented beginning leading to ripe plum and cherry flavors supported by firm, fine-grained tannins. Good length. Drink now.
