The Janzen collection of Cabernets from 2013 is as usual an expressive, highly extracted lot, and each of the wines unapologetically displays the richness born of unbridled ripeness while remaining varietally explicit. This one leads with voluminous, very complex aromas of blackcurrant, cherries, briar, graphite, black tea and cream, and its riveting, rich-as-can-be flavors follow suit. It is sizeable, full-bodied stuff that manages to stay within structural Cabernet lines even as its riper aspects push it right to the brink. If sure to be dismissed in some quarters for its brashness, it is a complete and compelling wine that will not be accused of holding anything back.

The 2013 Janzen Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon easily lives up to the first-growth reputation of this great terroir in Oakville. Produced from clone 337, this is truly profound stuff. It has an inky purple color with notes of charcoal embers interwoven with blueberry and blackberry liqueur, forest floor and white flowers. This wine was aged 27 months in 100% new Taransaud cooperage and has fabulous texture, richness and well-integrated oak tannin, alcohol and acidity. Drink it now as well as over the next 30+ years.
